his Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from Iowa State University.  His postdoctoral training was at the Roche Institute for Molecular Biology, New Jersey and at the National Institute for Medical Research and Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories, London.  He was Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (Bethesda) prior to joining the Cleveland Clinic in 1991.  Among his awards are the Eleanor Roosevelt International Cancer Research Fellowship (1990), Milstein Award from the International Society of Interferon and Cytokine Research (1993), Innovator Award from the Cleveland Clinic (2004), Harold L. Stewart Lecture in Experimental Oncology (2006), Sam and Maria Miller Scientific Achievement Award in Basic Research (2006), Research Honoree from the American Cancer Society (2007), and F. Mason Sones Innovation Award (2009).  He is inventor on more than 15 patents.  His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of antiviral innate immunity and on the role of viral infections in cancer.
