Assay Development

William Switzer, MPH received a BS in Microbiology from Clemson University in 1981 and an MPH from Emory University in 1992. Since re-joining the Centers for Disease Control in 1992, Mr. Switzer’s research has focused on establishing international surveillance programs for the prevention of retroviral zoonoses that could lead to the next AIDS-like pandemic. Currently, he is the principal investigator on studies to investigate simian retrovirus infection among persons occupationally

and naturally exposed to nonhuman primates. His studies have led to the identification of emerging simian retroviral infections in these populations, the identification of novel simian and human retroviruses, including HTLV-3 and HTLV-4, the development of better diagnostics to support this surveillance, and his research has provided a better understanding of the continuous risk for global retrovirus disease emergence. Mr. Switzer is the recipient of many honors and awards, and has been issued 10 patents for his viral discoveries and inventions. He has co-authored over 90 publications in prominent peer-reviewed journals and text books, including Science, Nature, the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Mr. Switzer is also an invited speaker at major retrovirus, veterinarian, and infectious disease conferences and has presented his research at many national and international meetings.
