Diane E. Bennett, MD MPH, is the Senior Epidemiologist in the HIV Drug Resistance Team in the HIV Department at the World Health Organization (WHO). She received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts, and did post-graduate training at Georgetown University Medical Centers, Johns Hopkins Medical Center, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She joined CDC in 1986, and directed the Lassa Fever project in Sierra Leone initially, later moving on to coordinate the U.S. survey to determine population levels of tuberculosis infection. She subsequently worked in London at the Communicable Disease Surveillance Center on HIV sero-surveys, before returning to CDC to develop surveillance methods to evaluate transmitted HIV drug resistance in the U.S. She currently works with a WHO team to develop methodology for prevention and assessment of HIV drug resistance in resource-limited countries, and has provided technical assistance to more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe during the past three years to develop national HIV drug resistance strategies.
