Elaine Abrams: What’s New and Why in WHO Revised PMTCT Guidelines
Elaine Abrams, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and the Mailman School of Public Health (MSPH).
She is Director of MTCT-Plus Initiative at the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) at MSPH and was recently appointed the Senior Director for Research at ICAP where she will support and further develop the organization’s research agenda. Dr. Abrams has been involved in the care of children, and families since the beginning of the HIV epidemic and served as Director of the Family Care Center at Harlem Hospital in NYC until 2005. Her research interests have focused on mother-to-child HIV transmission, the natural history of pediatric HIV, and optimizing antiretroviral therapy for infants, children and adolescents. She is currently the Chair of Primary Therapy Scientific Committee of the NIH-funded IMPAACT network. She serves as an advisor for the World Health Organization and US Public Health Service where she participates in guideline development for pediatric care and the prevention of mother-to-child transmission.
