Immune inflammatory reconstitution syndrome in HIV-infected children

Mark Coton, MD. obtained his medical degree at the University of Cape Town in 1979. He specialized in Paediatrics at the University of Witwatersrand where he developed an interest in infectious diseases. In 1988, he relocated to Tygerberg Academic Hospital where he studied TB meningitis. Between 1991 and 1995 he undertook a Fellowship in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at the
University of Colorado Health Science Centre, Denver, CO, USA. On return to Tygerberg in 1996, he established an infectious diseases service and Family Clinic for HIV. He obtained a PhD in immunology at Stellenbosch University in December 2004. He was appointed associate professor in 2004 and a full professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University in December 2007
He is a technical consultant for the WHO on paediatric HIV Classification, antiretroviral and tuberculosis guidelines. He co-chairs the Paediatric Guideline Committee for the HIV Clinicians Society and is part of the Paediatric HIV guideline committee for the National Department of Health.
Mark is the director of KID-CRU (Children’s Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Unit), established in 2002 for the conduct of prospective clinical trials.  He is the site Principal Investigator for the Stellenbosch Clinical Trial Unit funded through the Division of AIDS, NIH for the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent Clinical Trial Group (IMPAACT) and is co-PI for the CHER study through the CIPRA-SA Collaboration (Comprehensive International Program for Research in AIDS). Also, with colleagues from Tygerberg and the International Columbia AIDS Program, he established the “South to South” program for training African Healthcare Workers to better manage children affected by HIV.
