Prof. Pinzani is a physician scientist with full training in clinical and experimental Hepatology. His main research interests span from very basic topics such as cell and molecular mechanisms of hepatic fibrogenesis and cancer to clinically relevant areas such as portal hypertension and the development of non-invasive methodologies for the evaluation of fibrosis progression in CLD.
Since the beginning of the 90’s Prof. Pinzani has established a very competitive research laboratory integrated in the clinical environment of a Liver Unit. This setting allowed the development of several research strategies merging the actual competence of physicians with those of basic scientists operating in the laboratory according to the concept of “translational” medical research, i.e. the ability to mediate the passage from basic knowledge and/or technical advancements to clinical applications, and vice versa. The discoveries resulting from these activities are known worldwide and the laboratory has achieved an important international reputation. Prof. Pinzani has served as Editorial Board Member for several international journals and as Associate Editor for Journal of Hepatology (1998-2004) and Gut (2004-2008) and Editor-in-Chief for Fibrogenesis&Tissue Repair (2008-present). He is currently EASL representative in the UEGW scientific committee and President-Elect of the International Society for Hepatic Sinusoid Research (ISHSR).
