Management of HIV infection and Tuberculosis in children

Shabir A Madhi , F.C. Paed. qualified as a Paediatricain at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 1996. He has been involved in research on opportunistic infections in HIV-infected children and vaccine preventable diseases for the past 13 years. He has published widely on the impact of HIV
on the epidemiology of pneumonia, including tuberculosis, in African children. He has also undertaken pivotal trials on pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and rotavirus vaccines in HIV-infected and HIV non-infected African children, as well as studies on isoniazid prophylaxis in prevention of tuberculosis in HIV-affected children.
He is currently Professor of Vaccinology at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and holds the position of Chair of the Department of Science and Technology/National Research Foundation in “Vaccine Preventable Diseases”.
His research interest include studying the epidemiology and prevention of opportunistic infections in HIV-infected children, as well as clinical trials of vaccines and other interventions in HIV-infected individuals. He has published over 75 peer-reviewed publications related to vaccine-preventable diseases and is a founding-member of the Southern African Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases.
