He received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and did post-graduate training in internal medicine at this institution. After joining the faculty in 1993, his research focused on the clinical development of novel anti-HIV therapies. In 1997, his interests turned to evaluating the immunologic and clinical consequences of drug-resistant HIV, with an emphasis on exploring issues surrounding long-term virologic failure, resistance testing, viral fitness and T cell activation. In addition to his clinical investigation, Dr. Deeks maintains a large primary care clinic for HIV infected patients. He has been a member of several university committees, including the UCSF Committee on Human Research.
