Jude Byrne has been a leading advocate for the health and human rights of people who use drugs for over 25 years, within Australia and internationally. She has worked in and been on the boards of local national and international drug user organisations, she was a founding member and remains employed with the Australian Injecting and Illicit Drug Users League (AIVL,).
Jude has been a community representative on numerous federal ministerial/advisory committees in the areas of BBVs and illicit drugs in Australia and globally. Jude received the International Rolleston Award in 2011 in recognition for her work in harm reduction. Jude has been an injecting drug user for over 40 years, she underwent a successful HCV interferon ribavirin treatment in 2010.
