Michael was born in Amsterdam in 1959, and has lived in Barcelona, Spain, since 1986, where he was diagnosed with HIV. In 1993 he co-founded Projecte dels NOMS-Hispanosida, one of Spain’s most important HIV/AIDS community-based organizations. He is treatment counselor within a peer focused education program for people living with HIV.
In 2006 Barcelona Checkpoint was created, a community based centre of HIV and STI detection for Men who have Sex with Men and development of community research, which model has been followed in many European countries. The latest project in 2017 has been the implementation of Barcelona PrEP·Point, a community centre for information, research, control and uptake of PrEP.
Michael is also member of the European AIDS Treatment Group, community member of the INSIGHT Network and HIVACAT.
